Description

Visit several World War II landmarks, including Utah Beach, the first village liberated by Allied troops on D-Day and an artillery bunker built by the Nazis. A scenic drive south of Cherbourg leads to the charming French country village of Sainte-Mère-Eglise. Once known mostly for its livestock, it became forever famous after the evening of June 5, 1944, when American paratroopers landed and immediately engaged in a battle to make this Normandy’s first village liberated from German occupation. You’ll see the “Milestone Zero” marker and other monuments that commemorate the valor of these airborne liberators. Moving closer to the coast, the drive will wind through Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, near where the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment famously dropped in behind enemy lines on June 6, heroically making their way to Utah Beach. You’ll make your way there, too, to salute the very shoreline where over 20,000 Allied troops landed on D-Day. At tiny Saint-Marcouf, you’ll stop to see the remains of Crisbecq artillery battery, part of Germany’s Atlantic Wall coastal defenses. Guns from this battery were responsible for the sinking of the USS Corry during a fierce D-Day exchange.

Wear weather-appropriate clothing; include a light raincoat or umbrella.
Flat, comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen as needed.

This tour includes approximately 2 hours of moderate walking and standing, including up some steps and over uneven surfaces. The tour is available to wheelchair guests who have a collapsible wheelchair, are able to make their own way on and off the coach and have an able-bodied companion to assist them.
