Visit two of the most beautifully preserved villages in Spain’s lush Cantabria region, Santillana del Mar and Comillas. Travel to Santillana del Mar, a wonderfully maintained medieval hamlet crisscrossed by sloping, cobbled streets. View centuries-old towers, the lovely Palace of Velarde and the interior of the expansive Collegiate Church, a beautiful Romanesque structure. Within the church, see medieval tombs, Romanesque reliefs and the main altar’s splendid 17th-century embossed silver altarpiece. Just to the west, you’ll find enchanting Comillas, a historic village of stone-paved streets and squares lined with ancestral houses. Learn that during the early-20th-century reign of Alfonso XII, the village became a fashionable summer resort due to its inviting beaches. During an approximately one-hour tour, you’ll delight in architectural masterpieces, including the ornate Sobrellano Palace, the sprawling Pontifical University and a whimsical house dreamed up by famed architect Antoni Gaudí that is known as El Capricho.
