Delve into the atmospheric cobbled streets of Carcassone, deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site for its outstanding medieval heritage, which includes two concentric fortified walls boasting more than 50 towers. Settle in for a picturesque drive inland to the walled city of Carcassonne, a fortified hilltop settlement in existence since pre-Roman times. During your guided walking tour, you’ll enter the city through the 13th-century Narbonne Gate, which features two large, pointed towers and an asymmetrical drawbridge intended to slow down attackers. See the gate’s double-closure system of inner and outer walls, which sheds light on the evolution of military architecture over the centuries. You’ll visit the Saint-Nazaire Basilica, a Romanesque and Gothic sanctuary with extraordinary stained glass windows, and behold a 12th-century castle that was once the seat of power for the Trencavels, Viscounts of Carcassonne. Enjoy approximately three hours on your own, perhaps walking the imposing ramparts, pausing for photos on the beautiful Pont-Vieux Bridge or simply meandering the cobblestone streets lined with shops and restaurants.
