Located along Sardinia’s northern coast, Alghero is a picturesque medieval city that retains much of its Catalonian character from the time travelling merchants from Barcelona took control of the port. Even today, more than three centuries after the Iberians left, a form of medieval Catalan is still spoken, and street signs and menus are often written in both Catalan and Italian. Through the beautiful countryside full of olive groves, you can visit local vineyards or remain in the city center where you can tour the historic Catalan Church of San Francesco, with its ceramic dome and Gothic bell tower.
