Land Programs & Hotels

  • Explore the island nation of Mauritius, a tropical oasis known for its gorgeous beaches, botanical gardens, bird sanctuaries and engaging cities such as Port Louis, all of which you will experience.

NOTE: This is an extensive 4-day program that covers a lot of ground both on foot and by luxury coach. There is a lot of driving involved. This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties due to the amount of walking, steps and uneven ground.

    DAY 1

Upon arrival at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel located in the North of Mauritius. The remainder of the day and evening are at your convenience.

Dinner is included at the hotel’s main restaurant.

Note that check in time at the hotel is at 3:00pm.

Although every effort will be made to have rooms available before this time, this cannot be guaranteed. If you have an early arriving flight, you may wish to book an extra night in order to have the room available upon your arrival.

    DAY 2

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel and then meet your guide in the lobby to begin your sightseeing tour of the north of the island. North Mauritius is famous for its white-sand beaches, lively villages, shopping malls, historical sites and heritage.

Leaving the hotel, you will travel to the seaside village of Grand Baie. The resort village is the most popular holiday destination in Mauritius and offers a large choice of fashion and crafts in the traditional local shops, some operating for almost 50 years, alongside modern shopping centers and worldwide brand shops. You will have a guided visit and some free time to look for souvenirs.

Proceed next to the Notre Dame Auxiliatrice Church famous for its lovely red roof in the village of Grand Gaube. Ideally situated at the very northern point of Mauritius, overlooking the Coin de Mire islet, it offers a picturesque background for worthy snapshots.

Your next destination will be the Domaine de Labourdonnais. a privately owned 540 hectares Estate which was founded in 1774 and recently opened to the public. The main mansion, Château de Labourdonnais, surrounded its beautiful orchards, was built between 1856 and 1859 by Christian Wiehe where himself and his descendants lived until recently. Christian Wiehe was an influential figure in Mauritius in the 19th century. Today, the Estate has further diversified its activities offering products and services such as; fruit transformed products, leisure and events activities, real estate services, distillation of rum and much more.

Continue the day at the charming restaurant Le Fangourin, amidst the garden of the old Beau plan sugar estate, to enjoy a meal which is inspired from unique flavors while maintaining a rich Mauritian culinary heritage. Visit the L'Aveture du Sucre Museum a few metres away. It is housed in a former sugar factory where most of the original machinery has been preserved. Following your tour, you'll have the opportunity to sample different sugars and rums.

Your last visit will be at the Pamplemousses Botanical Gardens. A must for any visitor, this garden was created by French naturalist Pierre Poivre in 1767. Often called the “Jewel in the Crown”, the garden is known by world botanists for its 500 rare plant species from all over the world.

The most famous are the giant Victoria Regina water lilies and the 80 varieties of palm trees, including the talipot, said to flower once every 60 years and then die. Today the garden houses the “samadhi” (funeral shrine) of the Father of the Nation, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam.

Return to your hotel where you will have some free time.

Dinner is included at the main restaurant of your hotel.

    DAY 3

The next day enjoy breakfast at your hotel and board your coach for the drive to the south. Explore some of the best scenic highlights during this full day tour in the South of Mauritius. This region is the most preserved part of the island with its sandy coves, basalt cliffs, hidden falls, and hundreds of miles of sugar cane fields and dense forests.

Boarding your coach at the hotel, it's a 60-minute scenic drive to the Casela World of Adventures. This beautiful reserve and bird sanctuary of some 25 acres is situated in the west part of the island. Almost 1500 birds of 150 different species are housed in some 90 aviaries, including the Mauritian Pink Pigeon, one of the rarest birds in the world. Casela also houses a variety of animals, such as lions, tigers, monkeys, giraffes, pigmy hippos, lemurs, deer, giant tortoises, Llamas, zebras, ostriches, cassowaries, axis and emus. Its natural setting, spacious layout, and luxuriant green vegetation have made it a popular spot for both locals and visitors.

Your drive continues further down towards the forest reserve of Plaine-Champagne where you will reach a local restaurant with a breathtaking view over the coastline for lunch.

Traveling along through thick Chinese Guava groves, your route next takes you to discover the magnificent Chamarel Waterfall which emerges from the moors on the way down to view the unique seven-colored earths of Chamarel. These unusual mounds of undulating land that stretch in contrasting rainbow-colored layers of earth are believed to be the result of weathering and volcanic origin.

A few meters away is The Rhumerie de Chamarel. Set in a charming chalet, exhibiting tropical and traditional vibes, this distillery will have you learn all you need to know about Rum making. From the growing, harvest, fermentation to the sophisticated distilling process of this eco-friendly agricultural rum. The visit will end with a tasting of 6 rums (classic, double distilled, premium gold, coconut, vanilla, coffee, etc.)

Your journey back takes you down a winding road that unveils the West coast - you will have a final photo stop a Le Morne viewpoint offering a panoramic view over the Benitiers Island and Le Morne Brabant.

Before reaching your hotel, your route will pass the fishing villages and the famous salt pans of Black River.

Back at your hotel, enjoy some free time before dinner which is included at your hotel’s main restaurant.

    DAY 4

After breakfast and check out, proceed on a tour of the capital city of Port Louis and its surroundings.

Start the day with a visit the 19th century Eureka Colonial House in Moka. It is reputed to be one of the oldest and largest colonial houses on the island, with 109 doors and windows. Enjoy a guided tour of the house with its authentic antique furniture, which provides an interesting glimpse into colonial living. After exploring the house and admiring the peaceful garden, you can relax under the veranda with refreshments of a soft drink and local snacks.

The next stop will be at Port Louis’ rightly famous central market, the center of the local economy since Victorian times, is a good place to get a feel for the everyday life of many locals. Watch the hawkers at work and buy some souvenirs. Most authentic are the wonderful fruit and vegetable sections (including herbal medicines and aphrodisiacs).

Enjoy a fascinating cross-section of Mauritian life with a stop at the Caudan Waterfront, one of the oldest malls built in Mauritius. Located on the docks of Port-Louis, it includes many high-end boutiques, duty-free shops, a food court and artisanal stalls amongst others.

Contemplate two of the rarest stamps in the world at the Blue Penny Museum - the red one penny and the blue two-pence stamps which were issued in 1847. The museum also boasts a precious heritage collection about the rich history of the island.

After the visit, you will drive to the port for embarkation.

  • Marvel at the true icons of Rome, including the Vatican Museums, Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Colosseum and the gardens of the Pope’s summer residence, often enjoying private access to areas off-limits to the general public.

Note: This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties or those who utilize a wheelchair or scooter due to the amount of walking, steps, cobbled surfaces and lack of elevators at some sites.

The below represents a sample itinerary. Should a site be closed on a particular day, your itinerary will be amended accordingly so that all sites are seen. Final cruise documents received 21 days before sailing will include the most up to date itinerary for your particular voyage.

Please advise RSSC no later than 100 days before departure if you are travelling with other guests on this program. This is to ensure that you are placed in the same Vatican entrance group. Once the Vatican tickets are purchased, changes cannot be made. Guests will also be required to show identification when entering the Vatican.

    DAY 1

Upon disembarkation in Civitavecchia, you will be picked up at the cruise port and transferred to the Millenium Grand Hotel Palace in Rome. This 5-star boutique hotel enjoys a privileged city center location, on via Veneto, the Dolce Vita street. It features marble floors, chandeliers made of Murano crystal, and stunning frescoes by Venetian artist Guido Cadorin.

Check in is at 3:00pm, and the rest of the day is yours to settle in at your leisure. Guests are welcome to store luggage with the Bell Captain until rooms are ready.

Meals are on your own today.

    DAY 2

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will tour the Vatican Museums and Saint Peter’s Basilica. The museums contain some of the world’s greatest paintings and sculptures, including works by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Caravaggio. Besides seeing the most well-known exhibits like the Sistine Chapel, you will also visit areas usually closed to the general public, including the tomb of Pope Pius XII and the Niccoline Chapel, which features the lives of St. Lawrence and St. Stephen.

Note: When the Niccoline Chapel is not available, we will substitute with a visit to the “private room of the tears and the room of Pope’s vestments.

After the visit you will return back to your hotel. Lunch is on your own.

In the afternoon, meet the group in the lobby and leave the hotel to enjoy a beautiful panoramic drive of the Ancient Rome. Pass by the Colosseum, the Caracalla’s Baths and Circus Maximus. Then, you will reach Trevi Fountain, theatrically designed by Nicola Salvi; be sure you throw your coin to ensure your return to Roma.

Next, you will walk to the Piazza Navona, a lovely square constructed in the 15th century and lined with cafes and Baroque palaces. Under the Navona’ Square lies the magnificent Stadium of Domitian. The Stadium was commissioned around 80 AD by the Emperor Titus Flavius Domitianus as a gift to the people of Rome and was used mostly for athletic contests. After the visit you will enjoy a cocktail in this amazing location.

Afterwards, you will return to your hotel. Dinner is on your own.

NOTE: for guests with mobility restrictions, scooters are not permitted in the Vatican Museums and guests with wheelchairs are not permitted to tour with the group. Guests requiring a wheelchair will need to use a Museum wheelchair and have a separate guide at an additional cost of approximately 150 Euro payable on site (subject to change). Also, at Domitian Stadium there are 20 steps with no elevator.

    DAY 3

Following breakfast at the hotel, you will drive East from Rome toward Tivoli.

Tivoli is a small town on the lower slopes of the Apennines where the river Aniene plunges in cascades into the Roman plain. The villas testify to Tivoli’s importance as a holiday resort from the Roman period through the Renaissance. Tivoli or Tibur in antiquity came under Roman control in the 4C BC and it was there that a Sibyl prophesied the coming of Jesus Christ to the Emperor Augustus.

Visit Villa D’Este, masterpiece of the Italian Garden, and included in the UNESCO world heritage list. With its impressive concentration of fountains, nymphs, grottoes, plays of water, and music, it constitutes a much-copied model for European gardens in the mannerist and baroque styles.

After the visit, enjoy some free time to wonder through the colorful open-air market selling all sorts of souvenirs, fruits and local products, then enjoy lunch in a beautiful restaurant overlooking another one of Tivoli’s sights, the beautiful Villa Gregoriana. Drive back to the hotel.

In time, you will return to your hotel where the remainder of the day and dinner are on your own.

NOTE: for guests with mobility restrictions, the Villa d'Este Gardens are not accessible for wheelchairs or scooters. Only the first floor will be accessible in the Villa. The restaurant in Tivoli has approximately 40 steps to enter without an elevator.

Upon disembarkation in Port Elizabeth, meet your driver-guide who will accompany you on a road transfer to Kariega Private Game Reserve. Your journey will take approximately 1.5 hours.

Upon arrival at Kariega’s reception and jetty, check-in and board a boat transfer to River Lodge.

Kariega Game Reserve is a family-owned and operated Big 5 private safari reserve located along the Garden Route, making it the perfect South African safari destination.

This malaria-free game lodge incorporates 10,000 hectares of pristine African wilderness, as well as two abundant rivers - the Kariega and the Bushmans rivers. Experience close-up game viewing of the Big 5 - lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard - as well as multitudes of other South African wildlife from the comfort of a game drive vehicle.

Two beautiful rivers and access to the sea by boat from some of its lodges make this reserve unique. The ten thatched suites all feature a spacious bedroom with king-size or twin beds, an en-suite bathroom with shower, bathrobes, air conditioning, a heater, an in-room safe, a fan, tea and coffee-making facilities, satellite television, a minibar, and a private patio.

On arrival at River Lodge, a welcome drink will be served, whilst registration cards and indemnity forms are filled out. After some time to freshen up, regroup at the main lodge for well-earned afternoon meal.

Thereafter embark on your first game drive. These are conducted in 4-wheel drive open vehicles, allowing total freedom and giving you the opportunity to smell the African bush and feel as close as possible to the fauna and flora.

Leave the road and track down the Big 5. After dark spotlights are used, giving you the opportunity to view nocturnal creatures and carnivores on the hunt. Sundowners and light snacks will also be served in a clearing in the bush.

After your adventure return to the lodge for a delicious dinner.

    DAY 2 – February 26, 2026

Following an early morning wake-up call, enjoy a sunrise game drive. In the cool of the morning, as the sun rises, animal behavior is different to sunset.

Return to the lodge for breakfast and then gather your belongings, complete check out formalities and bid the staff farewell. You will be met for a road transfer back to Port Elizabeth harbor where you will re-board the ship.
