62 asia HERE IS EVERYTHING WE DID ON OUR ONE DAY IN MUMBAI: MUNICIPAL BUILDING This beautiful building was not far from our hotel. We did not go inside but admired the stunning architecture from the outside. The design is slightly gothic, and we could have spent so much longer admiring the detail. CHHATRAPATI SHIVAJI TERMINUS This stop was across the road from the Municipal Building. Crossing busy roads in India can be intimidating but the sight of the building was magnificent, and we just could not resist a closer look. Clutching each other we crossed the road quickly and assertively. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The structure is beautiful, and we were so grateful we saw it. TAJ MAHAL PALACE HOTEL The history of this building is fascinating. It started its life as a luxury hotel. During World War I it was converted into a hospital before becoming run down. Today it is a luxury hotel with guests such as U.S. President Barack Obama staying there. GATEWAY TO INDIA A stone’s throw away from the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel is the beautiful Gateway to India. This mighty structure was built to honor King George and Queen Mary. The Gateway to India overlooks the Arabian Sea. Although King George and Queen Mary did not get to see this gorgeous structure once built, it was the first building that visitors to India would have laid eyes on. The end of colonization was also marked here as the last British troops left India from this gateway. CRAWFORD MARKET We love handmade things and walking around markets is one of our favorite things to do in a new city. During our one day in Mumbai, we visited Crawford Market and really enjoyed looking around and buying a few things. There are a lot of people who sneer at those who buy things while travelling saying that they are ‘dust collectors’ and ‘experiences are worth so much more’. We on the other hand think that you must do/ buy what makes you happy. Supporting the local people, we think is important and the small souvenirs remind us of the wonderful times we had. Our buy of the day had to be beautiful leather covered journals.
