OVERVIEW

Behold exceptional Ottoman architecture in Berat, an exquisite hillside city dominated by a sprawling stone fortress, on this extraordinary coach tour. Named a UNESCO World Heritage site for its superbly preserved buildings, Berat lies along the sinuous Osum river and many of its homes cling in tiers to the steep hillsides. The myriad light-filled windows facing the valley earned the town its nickname: “City of a Thousand Windows.” Wind through the lower town, viewing several notable medieval Orthodox churches and mosques, including the 16th-century Leaded Mosque, prized for its striking lead-covered domes.

Ascend to the remains of the city’s magnificent fortified castle, the Kala, built in the 13th century with distinctive Roman-Byzantine and Ottoman styles blended together as it expanded through the centuries. From the elevated fortress grounds, a panorama of lush valleys, modest villages and soaring mountains stretches like a stunning natural tapestry. Explore the castle’s Onufri Museum, home to precious religious icons and other fascinating artifacts. Relish the flavors of Albania at a traditional luncheon, and take a few moments to browse nearby shops. Next we visit “Dollani traditional house” inside the house, where you will experience the albanian hospitality and as well as taste the homemade drink raki (alcohol), the turkish coffee and a suxhuk as dessert (oriental dessert still homemade in Albania).

A lunch of traditional Albanian cuisine follows, after which you will visit the Mangalem neighborhood and stop for pictures. Drive back to the port.
